40th James Cunningham Seawall Race Oct 31, 2010

Greens Market was proud to be one of the sponsers of the 40th Annual James Cunningham Sewall Race on Ocotober 31, 2010.

The James Cunningham Seawall Race was originated and is still organized to this day by the Lions Gate Road Runners in 1971, the year the last stone was laid on the Stanley Park Seawall, in honour of James “Jimmy” Cunningham, a stonemason who spent most of life coordinating the construction of the seawall. The race takes runners along the entire circumference of the seawall, showing off the gorgeous Vancouver scenery.

James Cunningham (1873-1963)

James “Jimmy” Cunningham was a Scottish immigrant who was passionate about the Seawall. He was a master mason who dedicated 32 years of his life to the construction of the seawall from 1931 until his retirement in 1963. Even after he retired, Cunningham continued to return (once in his pajamas) to monitor the wall’s progress. To commemorate his contribution to the construction project, a plaque has been placed in the cliff face opposite Siwash Rock.
